What We Teach
Guitar Lessons: Areas of Study
Chords
Learning chords is the foundation of guitar playing. Students build confidence by mastering common chord shapes, smooth transitions, and proper hand positioning while developing the skills needed to accompany songs in a variety of musical styles.
Lessons focus on chord changes, finger placement, rhythm, and progressions through engaging exercises and familiar music. As students become more comfortable with chords, they gain the freedom to play thousands of songs with confidence.
Strumming and Rhythm
Strong rhythm skills help students become confident and expressive guitar players. Our guitar lessons teach a variety of strumming patterns, rhythmic techniques, and timing exercises that prepare students to play everything from pop and rock to folk and country.
Students develop steady timing through backing tracks, exercises, and real songs while learning how to create different rhythmic feels. As their rhythm improves, they become more versatile and confident musicians.
Technique
Developing proper guitar technique allows students to play comfortably while improving speed, accuracy, and control. Our private guitar lessons focus on healthy hand position, finger independence, picking technique, and efficient movement across the fretboard.
Students strengthen coordination through scales, technical exercises, and carefully selected repertoire. As their technique improves, they can tackle more advanced music with greater confidence and ease.
Note Reading
Learning to read music helps guitar students become more independent musicians. Our guitar lessons build note-reading skills while teaching students to recognize rhythms, notes, and musical symbols accurately across the fretboard.
Students practice sight-reading, rhythm counting, and musical notation through games, exercises, and engaging repertoire. As reading becomes more natural, they learn new guitar music more quickly and confidently.
Music Theory
Understanding music theory gives guitar students the tools to become creative and independent musicians. Our guitar lessons explore scales, chords, harmony, keys, and chord progressions while showing how theory applies directly to the guitar.
Students strengthen their understanding through practical exercises, improvisation, and repertoire. As their musical knowledge grows, they learn songs faster, improvise with confidence, and develop stronger musicianship.
Performance
Performance opportunities help guitar students build confidence while developing strong musical communication skills. Our guitar lessons prepare students for recitals, auditions, school performances, and playing for family and friends.
Students learn stage presence, memorization techniques, and performance preparation in a supportive environment. Every performance helps students become more confident, expressive, and accomplished musicians.

New York City Guitar Lessons: Frequently Asked Questions
Should a beginner start with acoustic or electric guitar?
Both acoustic and electric guitars can be appropriate for beginners. Acoustic guitars are portable and require minimal equipment, while electric guitars may have lighter strings and can be easier for some students to play. The right choice depends on the student’s musical interests, age, hand strength, and the style of music they want to learn.
What size guitar does a child need?
Children may need a 1/2-size, 3/4-size, or full-size guitar depending on their height, arm length, and hand size. Playing an appropriately sized instrument makes it easier to reach the strings, develop proper posture, and avoid unnecessary tension. Our guitar teachers can help families select the right size before beginning lessons.
Do I need to own a guitar before starting lessons?
Students should have regular access to a guitar at home so they can practice between lessons and make steady progress. If you don’t already own one, Key Steps Music School offers guitar rentals for current students, making it easy to get started without a large upfront investment. Our teachers are also happy to recommend an appropriate acoustic or electric guitar based on the student’s age, musical interests, goals, and budget.
What do students learn in private guitar lessons?
Our guitar lessons in New York City may include chords, strumming, rhythm, fingerstyle playing, scales, technique, note reading, music theory, ear training, improvisation, and performance skills. Lessons are personalized so students build a strong foundation while learning music they genuinely enjoy.
What styles of guitar do you teach?
Students may study rock, pop, classical guitar, folk, jazz, blues, fingerstyle, singer-songwriter accompaniment, or a combination of styles. Our NYC guitar teachers tailor repertoire and technical exercises to the student’s interests while developing musicianship that can transfer across different genres.
How long should beginner guitar lessons be?
Thirty-minute guitar lessons are generally appropriate for young beginners, while teenagers and adults often benefit from 45- or 60-minute sessions. Longer lessons provide additional time for technique, repertoire, theory, improvisation, and songwriting. We can recommend a lesson length based on the student’s age and goals.
Can adults take guitar lessons?
Yes. We teach guitar students of all ages, including adults with no previous experience. Lessons are tailored to your interests and learning pace.
Will I learn to read music or play by ear?
Students can learn both. Our guitar lessons combine note reading, chord charts, tablature, ear training, and music theory depending on the student’s goals.
Can I learn to sing while playing guitar?
Absolutely. Many students enjoy learning guitar accompaniment while developing singing skills. Lessons can incorporate rhythm, chord progressions, and vocal coordination.
Do you prepare students for performances?
Yes. Students may prepare for recitals, school performances, auditions, competitions, or simply build confidence performing for family and friends.
