Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a Key Steps Music School student to rent an instrument?
Yes. Our New York City instrument rental program is exclusively available to current Key Steps Music School students. This allows us to provide personalized support, proper instrument sizing, convenient monthly billing, and easy upgrades as students progress. If you’re not yet a student, we’d love to help you get started with a trial lesson before reserving your instrument.
What's included with my instrument rental?
Every instrument rental includes everything you need to begin learning right away. Depending on the instrument, rentals include the instrument itself along with essential accessories such as a case, bow, shoulder rest, rosin, gig bag, tuner, stand, sustain pedal, or other equipment needed for successful lessons. Our goal is to make starting music lessons in New York City as simple and stress-free as possible.
What's the difference between month-to-month rentals and rent-to-own?
Our month-to-month rental program is ideal for beginners and younger students who may need to upgrade to larger instrument sizes as they grow. It provides maximum flexibility without a long-term commitment.
Our rent-to-own program is designed primarily for full-size instruments. Instead of making a large upfront purchase, your monthly payments build toward ownership, making it an affordable way to invest in a quality instrument over time.
Can I upgrade to a different instrument size?
Absolutely. Students renting fractional instruments, such as violins, can upgrade to the next size whenever needed, subject to availability. This allows growing musicians to always have an instrument that fits properly without purchasing multiple instruments along the way.
How does billing work?
We keep instrument rentals in New York City simple and convenient. Rental fees are added directly to the same monthly invoice as your music lessons, so you’ll never have to manage separate accounts or make payments to a third-party rental company. Invoices are sent on the first of each month and can be paid securely online by credit card or bank transfer.
What happens if my rental instrument is damaged?
A refundable security deposit is collected at the start of your rental. Normal wear from regular use is expected, but renters are responsible for damage caused by misuse, neglect, accidents, or loss. If repair costs exceed the security deposit, the remaining balance is the responsibility of the renter. We encourage students to treat every instrument with care so it stays in excellent condition for years to come.
Do you deliver instruments, or do I pick them up?
We offer both options. Students may pick up their rental instrument at an arranged location, or we can deliver it within New York City for a small delivery fee. We’ll work with you to choose the most convenient option based on your schedule.
Can I purchase the instrument later?
Yes. If you’d like to own your instrument, we offer a rent-to-own program on qualifying instruments. This allows you to build toward ownership through affordable monthly payments instead of paying the full purchase price upfront.
Can I return my rental at any time?
Yes. Month-to-month rentals may be returned at any time. Your rental charges will be prorated based on the date the instrument is returned, ensuring you only pay for the time you had the instrument.
What happens if I'm in the rent-to-own program but stop taking lessons?
If you decide to stop taking lessons before completing your rent-to-own agreement, you’ll have two options. You may purchase the remaining balance of the instrument and keep it, or you may return the instrument to Key Steps Music School. Our goal is to provide flexibility while making the process straightforward and fair for every student.
